Scouts plan annual food drive
The Boy Scouts of Carson Valley are putting to use the Boy Scouts of America oath “to help other people at all times” by holding the 10th annual “Scouting for Food Drive.” More than 15,000 bags donated by Raley’s Supermarket and Drug Center, bearing the details of the drive, will be distributed by both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts throughout the Carson Valley on Saturday, Nov. 8, according to Jerry Smith, Scout Food Drive chairman.
The Scouts are requesting that you put non-perishable food items in the bag and place them at your front door before 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, when the boys will return to pick them up. If you are skipped in the bag delivery, any bag will do. Barrels will also be available at Raley’s and Scolari’s for your donations, if that is more convenient.
Among the suggested items are canned vegetables, soups, meats, including hams, sugar, coffee, tea, cereals, jelly, peanut butter, chili, spaghetti, ravioli, juices, baby food and cereals, cake, cookie and boxed pie mixes, canned and powdered milk. Other items are tooth paste and brushes, body, dish and laundry soaps, toilet tissue and kleenex. There is no end to the list.
The “Scouting for Food Drive” is a nationwide effort supported by the Nevada Area Council of Boy Scouts Pinenut District, United Way, businesses and agencies.
Among the Cub Scout and Boy scout Units participating in this project are: Troops 33, 140, 240, 340, 411 and 495 and their unit leaders.
The Highway Patrol of Reno will assist the youngsters by setting up scale at Lampe Park for the donations to be weighed.
All foods collected in the Carson Valley will be donated to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The Food Closet, in operation since 1988, provides emergency food supplies to families experiencing temporary economic setbacks.
Food vouchers are distributed to qualified families in need by the Douglas County Social Services. The vouchers are presented to the Food Closet for distribution of up to two weeks’ food supply for the qualified family. The Carson Valley Community Food Closet is located in the Hussman Building at 1255 Waterloo Lane (near Lampe Park) in Gardnerville.
