Rev. Thyr takes on new job

Staff reports

Reverend Elmer Thyr, assisting pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville for the past 3-1/2 years, has accepted the request of the Calif/Nev/Hawaii district of his denomination to become the full time mission developer of Trinity’s daughter congregation, Shepherd of the Sierra.

Although Thyr had served there on a part-time basis since the start of services at Jacks Valley School just over a year ago, the denomination felt that for the good of the new congregation, a full-time pastor was required. Before starting call proceedings for a full-time resident pastor, the district asked members of the congregation if they had any preferences. To avoid a gap in ministry at SOS, the congregation suggested that Pastor Thyr continue to serve, full-time.

Known as successful church planters in the Southern California area, Pastor Thyr and his wife, Maxine, are already putting their experience to work in this new area of Carson Valley. With average attendance at Sunday morning worship expected to top 100 before Christmas, the new church is already in the process of starting a choir, and the Sunday School – with an outstanding staff of teachers, is also growing rapidly.

With nearly 2-1/2 acres of property purchased on Highway 395 and architects ready to be interviewed, plans for the construction of the first permanent units on the church campus are beginning to move ahead.

“The property was purchased because of its outstanding view of the Sierra and one of the requirements faced by the architect to be selected is that every seat in the chapel will have an unobstructed view of the Sierra,” Thyr said.

At the present time, worship is conducted at 11 a.m. each Sunday in the “Chapel in the Gym” at Jacks Valley Elementary School, just a mile from the permanent site. Services are informal and include gospel and praise hymns and “children’s church” – with a message for the many children who come to the front – often featuring some “illusions” by Pastor Thyr, who is an amateur magician. The pastor’s message for the day is geared to enhancing the lives of people by directing them to God’s solution to daily problems. Sunday school for children and adults is conducted each Sunday at 9:45 a.m.

Said Thyr, “We know that many newcomers and unchurches will prefer to attend a church that is already established and has a beautiful worship center already in use. But we also know that there are many people for whom the prospect of growing a church is an exciting and challenging, once in a lifetime opportunity. These are the people we especially invite to come and give us a try. Come, grow with us!”

Jacks Valley Elementary School is located one mile west of Highway 395 on Jacks Valley Road – about 2 miles south of WalMart in Carson Valley. Everyone is welcome at SOS – Shepherd of the Sierra.
