The Carson River is higher now than at any time in the past several years. The road through Genoa Lane is impassable at Boyds.

June 14, 1918

Cutting of the first crop of alfalfa in Carson Valley will commence with in the next few days and thus far no effort has been made to establish a uniform wage scale as has been done by other agricultural districts in Nevada.

80 years ago

June 16, 1933

The Marine rifle team from the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hawthorne under command of Lt. J.F. Goodin, will meet the Douglas County rifle team in a competitive match to be held on the Gardnerville range Sunday, June 25.

50 years ago

June 13, 1963

Douglas County, along with all the other 16 Nevada counties, soundly defeated the proposed one-cent sales tax increase which was voted on in a special referendum Tuesday.


June 16, 1988

He’s rough. He’s gruff. He’s a true John Wayne. The description fits Bill Mendes. He offers few details about himself, but those who know and love this year’s Carson Valley Man of the Year are glad to fill in the blanks.

The girl in the red dress is an angel, Shawn Miller, 7, told his mother. She’s an angel who came to help him awaken his older brother. Ricky Mays, 16, lay in Shawn’s lap, unconscious, and bleeding from the head following an accident May 30 at Waterloo Lane and Highway 88. Christine Valentine said she saw the girl in red dress get in the car and help the boys. “She wasn’t in there very long,” Valentine said. “I think that her prom date was with her.” Both left after the boys were safe, she said.
