Redevelopment debate results in fight between commissioners

Genoa, Nev. — A debate over the Stateline redevelopment area resulted in an altercation between Douglas County commissioners on Thursday evening.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Tahoe Transportation Center in Stateline for a heated argument at 5:55 p.m. during the meeting.

Commission Chairman Barry Penzel called a recess after saying Commissioner John Engels had insulted three fellow commissioners in a five-page statement.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, two of the commissioners became involved in a brief fight.

The pair separated on their own, the sheriff’s office reported, and minor injuries were reported.

Undersheriff Ron Elges said the investigation is continuing and no further information will be released.

The investigation will be referred to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

Commissioners resumed their hearing after a recess.

The debate over the redevelopment area focuses on whether it should be used to fund an events center.

Residents on both sides spoke during the Thursday night debate.

Before the discussion, commissioners heard from Deputy District Attorney Zach Wadlé who said they could shorten the lifespan of the area, but could not remove portions from it.
