Young At Heart craft fair Nov. 19
November 10, 2011
Vice President Esther Hildebrand puts her whole heart into the annual Young At Heart holiday craft fair.
For 17 years Hildebrand has organized the event as a fundraiser for the Douglas County Senior Center.
“It has grown since the beginning. Every year I have a waiting list for vendor spaces. There’s such a good variety of merchandise, and the prices are reasonable,” she said. “It gives people a chance to shop for homemade gifts rather than store bought.”
The craft fair is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the senior center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville.
With 20 vendors slated to sell their wares, Hildebrand said there will be something for everyone.
“We have everything from soaps to jewelry to crocheted items,” she said. “A local man sells wooden birdhouses. He sells out every year. They’re beautiful.”

A snack bar will be selling hotdogs, chili, desserts and drinks.
“We always serve pumpkin pie,” Hildebrand said. “At the bake sale we’ll have plenty of homemade fudge, pumpkin bread and rum cake.”
There will also be raffle drawings all day with prizes donated by Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Atlantis Casino, Carson Valley Inn, Fandango and others.
Frances Lucido, 79, has been selling her hand-made baby blankets, dish towels and pot holders strictly at the Young At Heart craft fair for 11 years. She crochets all year in preparation for the show.
“The people that come are all local people, which makes everything more neighborly,” Lucido said. “I really like the atmosphere.”
Young At Heart began in 1975 as the fundraising arm of the senior center. The craft fair is their largest one-day money-maker of the year.
They also hold bingo every third Saturday of the month.
Recently, Young At Heart helped purchase an inventory scanning system that will save work hours in the kitchen, as well as a lot of paperwork.
“We help with whatever needs to be purchased at the center that the county can’t help with,” Hildebrand said.
To donate to Young At Heart visit the senior center or send checks to P.O. Box 1042, Gardnerville, NV, 89410.
