Winter’s the time for planning gardens and motorcycle rides
January 25, 2011
Have you received at least a dozen or so seed catalogs in the mail recently? Well I sure have a huge stack. I wonder how cost effective it is for all these seed companies to send out these beautiful colored catalogs to me when I only order a little bit of seed from maybe one company.
I find it to be a lot of fun in the dead of winter to browse the catalogs and make plans for the up and coming gardening season. I have my favorites that I will plant to make salsa in the fall. The Big Mama Roma tomatoes, tomatillos, Anaheim chilies, a variety of bell peppers, onions and garlic. Try Black Beauty zucchini and carrots for relish. This year I am going to try the Yukon Gold potatoes, normally I only plant red potatoes. I also want to try horseradish, it is my favorite condiment.
Recently the food channel has been cooking meals with kohlrabi that looks interesting. I am also eyeing a Giant Sakurajima radish that claims to grow to 15 pounds in 80 days. I have no idea what you would do with a 15-pound radish.
A few perennials I have in my yard include blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, asparagus and rosemary. The rosemary is a very hardy plant and will grow into quite a bush. One year my large plant died out in the very center. I dug it up and planted a new one the next year.
All this writing about gardening is making me hungry. I think I’ll go cook some yellow and green beans for dinner to go along with my cheesy potatoes.

The official meeting is the fourth Saturday of the month at 8:30 a.m. at Jethro’s also. After breakfast and a quick meeting, we try to ride weather depending.
The club also does some overnight trips as well as some two-week road trips in the summer.
