Topaz Lake celebrates 37th firefighter’s barbecue
September 7, 2004
The Topaz Lake Fire Department’s 37th annual fund-raising barbecue on was once again a huge success on Sept. 5.
The perfect, early fall weather enticed more than 900 people to attend the event that took place at the fire station near Topaz Lake. Seven hundred pounds of beef were barbecued to perfection and served to the hungry crowds. This was complemented by salads and other tasty side-dishes that were donated by 77 women in the community.
These ladies also volunteered their time the day of the event working in shifts of 18 people at a time to act as servers. Twenty men over and above the regular volunteers were on hand to help set up the event and then do the clean-up afterwards. In all, more than 814 meals were served and no one went away hungry.
One of the more enjoyable events was seeing Senator “Jake” Jacobsen, R-Minden, lend a hand in the serving lines.
The well loved 84-year-old Senator, who was the longest standing Senator in the state, finally retiring two years ago. His appearance was enjoyed by everyone as he stood at the end of the food line serving up the barbecued meat and a helping of humor and senatorial wit.
The sales for the raffle tickets were brisk. The list of items being raffled seemed endless as more than 300 items were donated by business, even as far away as Lake Tahoe and Reno, to the raffle.
