Soup and chili supper benefits high school music

The Douglas High Music Boosters are serving up soup and chili to raise money for the music department.

The “Soup-er Chili Supper” is 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3 at Meneley Elementary School.

Proceeds help pay travel expenses for 100 band and chorus students to perform at the Music in the Park Festival in Los Angeles the end of March.

“We encourage support from the community to keep the kids occupied and interested in good activities,” booster Lynn Tooker said. “We’re trying to pay their way and not impact the school budget. This is not something the school pays for.”

Former Carson Valley Inn chef, Diane Gurney, along with some student chefs are cooking up homemade chili, chicken soup, veggies, cornbread, salad and desserts.

Entertainment will be provided by the Douglas High School Jazz Band.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to compare our skills to other groups in competition,” Tooker said. “It’s recognition and utilization of the skills the students are learning.”

The band and chorus students perform and compete locally throughout the year garnering trophies and accolades regularly.

“Besides being a very worthwhile extracurricular activity, music has been shown to help their ability to learn,” Tooker said. “It’s something they spend a tremendous amount of hours on practicing their craft.”

Tickets cost $8 per person, or $25 per family (immediate family only). They are available at the door, or from any music department student.
