Playing golf in a cow pasture

The sky was blue and the temperatures comfortable as golfers of all skill levels converged on the Baldo Giorgi Country “Pasture” Club greens to begin the first tee at 8 a.m. last Saturday.
The event was the Fifth Annual Jackie Giorgi Pasture Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Antelope Valley Lions Club, a fund-raiser for an annual scholarship available to Coleville High School students.
What initially started as a nine-hole course a few years ago has grown into 18 holes as the popularity of this event increases.
This year, 57 golfers participated on a less than manicured course, complete with water hazards, clipped and trimmed greens and a whole lot of rough, accented with the normal ground hazards found in any pasture.
With the back-drop of the rugged Sierra to the west and the Sweetwater Range to the east, the surroundings would have vied with Pebble Beach for scenic beauty as the course challenged the best players and gave a good laugh for the worst.
With everyone completing their game about noon, it was time for the barbecue and the awards presentations.

Pork ribs and chicken that had been smoked with cherry wood for five hours in a huge smokehouse, designed and built by Lion member, Cliff Sharp of Walker, were slow cooking on a special portable barbecue under the watchful eye of cooks Darrell Riise and Mike Curti.
More than 70 participants and spectators were treated to huge portions of barbecue with all the fixin’s on the side.
After everyone had full stomachs and clean plates, the awards presentations for first, second and third-place teams were passed out and raffle tickets were drawn for lucky winners.
All of the days events garnered the Antelope Valley Lions Club more than $1,000 for the scholarship.
“This event has grown every year,” Lion Dave Murray said.
“It is a great community event and everyone participates in the fun.”
