Oktoberfest, costume ball ride into sunset
September 2, 2016
In attending the Sertoma meeting last week I learned that they're not doing Oktoberfest this year.
That was a blow. I've probably been the sole reporter to ever cover it, and I'll admit to my work being sporadic at best.
Instead, they're doing a Western Swing Dance and barbecue Oct. 8 at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center.
We'll have more information about that in the calendar.

Another fall event that has gone by the wayside is the annual 4H Fall Costume Ball, I heard from Shannon Montana.

Instead they're doing Pumpkin Bingo (and PINGO was its name-o) on Oct. 15 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church where you'll be able to win all size of pumpkins. There's also a grand prize for a $100 WalMart gift card for the less squash-enamored.

"Let there be poop," will be the cry on Sept. 17 when the Rotary Club of Minden sponsors its second annual Cow Chip Bingo at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
Tickets are $10 a block and if you guess where the first cowpie will land you could win $400.
All this stuff will be in the calendar over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

I met Joe Hooven of Burbank, Calif., on Wednesday. He came by the office to say he'd been reading the paper from down there. He's in town visiting his daughter, who lives in Minden.
Joe said about a quarter of a century ago he wrote some letters to the Burbank Leader. The editor saw them and asked him if he had any more. When Joe's neighbor got elected mayor, he became a regular source. The editor nicknamed him "Scoop."

We've had lots of folks in the office looking for TV listings this week, and have been explaining where they're located.
Part of the problem with what I said last week was that I hadn't seen how it would all come together.
The TV listing is actually the back eight pages of the classifieds section that comes with the Sunday paper, so don't just toss that thing.
I compared the latest version with the week's before and the type size is the same, but the pay channel listings have been pulled. If you have Showtime or HBO or their ilk, you're probably better off looking on your television's directory, anyway.
