Letters to the Editor for Sept. 28

Supporting Lippmann

Editor:

Republicans, Democrats, independents, and non-partisan voters are coming together in Douglas County to support Larry Lippmann for School Board Trustee Area 5.

Too many noneducation professionals have been trying to manage our school system from the lofty heights of the state and federal government. Larry has taught at Douglas County High School for 23 years and understands what works and what doesn't.

Larry believes that Common Core has delivered way too many high-stakes tests and intruded on student (and family) privacy. He also feels strongly in providing diversity in K-12 education opportunities, such as more vocational training and the return of arts and music.

My wife and I have no children (and therefore grandchildren) in Douglas County schools, but we've become aware that for the sake of our county's future our education system needs better guidance. If you agree with us, I hope you will consider helping Larry with his campaign.

Larry also has a plan for saving money on overpriced textbooks by allowing students to use tablets to do their school work. It's a simple and practical idea that he would be glad to discuss with you.

Thanks to the Swim Center

Editor:

Now that the summer is over and the kids are back in school, I would like to congratulate the Carson Valley Swim Center for a great summer. I have been a long time lap swimmer and this past summer was the best yet. There were so many activities available and the coordination of lanes for families, seniors, lap swimmers, exercise classes, water walkers, swim lessons and swim team practices went really well. I heard many compliments from fellow pool enthusiasts. I have used many pool facilities across the country and we truly have the best one here in Carson Valley … it is a gem. I want to thank all the staff and management for a job well done. I can't wait to see what next summer has to offer.
