Good job on planning appointments

EDITOR:

As a citizen who takes an active interest in – and often an opposite position on – matters that many of our county commissioners favor, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate them on reappointing Jo Etta Brown and Kevin Servatius to the Douglas County Planning Commission, and approving the master plan update.

I also want to thank all those members of the public who spoke in favor of the reappointments, including members of the Good Governance Group. I believe your public voices changed several votes, though doing so may have put a few commissioners out of favor with some of their supporters.

Unlike last year, the commissioners did the right thing, and it will benefit all the citizens of Douglas County. Now we must focus our attention on future requests for amendments to the Master Plan, development agreements, and other policies that affect our quality of life, including growth, housing and transportation.

Concerned citizens of all political stripes are welcome at the Good Governance Group meetings at 7 a.m. every Tuesday at 88 Cups in the Minden Village complex on Lucerne Street. We believe, as did famed anthropologist Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

We have no illusions about changing the world, but we do know that we can make Douglas County government more transparent, and our elected officials more accountable to the electorate. We fully subscribe to the fact that one has no reason to complain about one’s government if one doesn’t get involved in correcting its ills.
