Carson Valley Sertoma cooks up cash for senior soup program
January 31, 2012
The Carson Valley Sertoma have 250 pounds of crab and 75 pounds of tri-tip, and don’t want any leftovers.
The club’s third annual crab and tri-tip feast is 5-9 p.m. Feb. 11 in the CVIC hall. Tickets cost $35, and all proceeds benefit the senior soup program at the Douglas County Senior Center.
“The soup is something seniors really enjoy especially on the cold days,” Sertoma Cindy Petersen said. “For some seniors it’s the first nutritional meal they may get of the day, and we wanted to be sure they had it.”
Although the senior center provides the main lunch, the cost of soup is not covered under the state grant money the center receives for food. According to Travis Lee, manager of senior services and transportation, being able to serve soup in the morning prior to lunch is something the seniors really appreciate.
“It’s a good nutritional supplement for the rest of the day,” he said. “Thank goodness for Sertoma stepping up to provide the soup. This is driven by their interest and passion, and it has been a good partnership for us to make this happen.”
The all-you-can-eat buffet includes baked potato, salad and dessert. Beer, wine and soda available for sale.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle with tickets for $1 a piece, or 6 for $5.
Last year, the Sertomas exceeded their goal of raising $5,000 for the soup program, and are hoping to do it again.
“Every penny of the profit goes towards the soup program,” Petersen said.
Seating is limited and tickets will be sold at the door while supplies last.
