Arts Council gaining ground

The Carson Valley Arts Council recently announced a $900,000 capital campaign, fulfilling the promise to create a home for the arts.
When successfully completed, the campaign will expand CVAC’s impact in the communities it serves, and also give the Minden-based Arts Council a permanent home.
“The capital campaign will be implemented in three phases. The campaign was designed with the current economy in mind, so that each phase of development will only be undertaken as funds are raised,” said Brian Fitzgerald, CVAC President. “The response from potential donors has been overwhelmingly positive. The project builds upon our strong relationships within the community.”
The campaign has had significant early success. Personal gifts and pledges totaling $340,000 has earned CVAC a strong showing. With these early donations, CVAC has raised 38 percent of its campaign goal.
In 2008, the CVAC put a down payment on the old Copeland Lumber building thanks to a very generous donation from Big George Ventures. The building was renamed the Copeland Cultural Arts Center and CVAC moved in. With the help of the Smallwood Foundation and volunteers from the GE Company, the front office area was remodeled to accommodate the community and organizations with shared office and gallery space.
The capital campaign set a goal of $900,000 allotted to pay off the note on the old Copeland Lumber building. Although the economic downturn slowed the capital campaign, the decision was made to proceed with the repayment of the debt so that CVAC could be debt-free and move forward with the renovation of the Copeland building into a fixed-seat theater.
