A salute to our county’s past
November 16, 2011
We believe that Douglas County’s past, its history, will show us the way to its future.
Genoa, birthplace of Nevada politics, government and so much more, hosted the annual Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce Gala on Saturday dedicated to celebrating 150 of the county’s most influential people in honor of the county’s 150th birthday.
The county’s actual formation occurred on Nov. 29, 1861, when the first territorial legislature decided Nevada’s first counties.
So Douglas was not a lone birth, but one of nonuplets, including Ormsby, Washoe, Storey, Lyon, Humboldt, Esmeralda, Churchill and Lake counties.
We’ve heard there were some celebrations of the counties’ sesquicentennials. We wager there were few where not one, but two specific observances were held in honor of their founding.
On Saturday, there weren’t many open seats at the gala, but there were lots of folks who were either counted among the 150 or related to someone who was.

And someone with the time and energy could easily make a list of another 150 influential people.
We offer our congratulations to the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Douglas County. We also thank Leadership Douglas County and all the participants for hosting the Oct. 1 celebration in Minden Park.
Here’s a toast to another 150 years.
