June 25, 1922 – September 27, 2016
Lorraine J. Grant, a long time resident of Gardnerville, passed away September 27, 2016.
Lorraine was born June 25, 1922 in Hollywood, California to Myrtle and Arthur Pippenger. Lorraine graduated from Fairfax High School, in Hollywood, and was a friend and classmate of Judy Garland. She, along with several friends, sat with Judy at the premiere of the, now legendary classic movie, "The Wizard of OZ", which was quite a treat.
Lorraine married her high school sweetheart, Malcolm "Mac" Grant, in 1940. They moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1948, where they raised their 3 daughters; Carole, Candy and Cherylee.
In 1960 Mac and Lorraine moved to South Lake Tahoe and opened up "The Red Hut Waffle Shop", which they successfully operated with their daughters until 1987. During this time, when Lorraine was not greeting customers at the Red Hut, she would be antiquing, (which she loved), shopping at the thrift stores in the area, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mac and Lorraine also enjoyed fishing in Smith Valley, where they would spend many days at their property on the Walker River.
The family is extremely grateful and blessed to have had Carole Joyner, caring for Lorraine as her friend and caregiver for 7 years. Also, the family wishes to thank Patrick Ward and his staff at Carson Valley Residential Care
Center for their loving care to our mother while she was a resident there.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Mac, and is survived by three daughters, Carole Horlacher (David) of Franklin, TN; Candy Hastie (John), previously of Smith Valley; Cherylee Hawks of Gardnerville. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Kerri Grant of Troy, MT; Jody York of Smith Valley; Travis Hawks of Gardnerville; Tracey Hall of Gardnerville and ten great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service, under the direction of Walton's Funeral Home is planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Nevada Humane Society (nevadahumanesociety.org) or the Douglas County Animal Welfare Group.
