Kenneth Carl Conkie
June 15, 2017
Oct. 8, 1964 ~ June 2, 2017
Kenneth Carl Conkie passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in his home on June 2, 2017. He was 52 years old.
Ken is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Gardnerville; his brother William "Billy" Conkie Jr. of Reno; and his father William "Bill" Conkie Sr. along with wife Patricia (Trish), both also of Reno. He was preceded in death by his mother, Katharine Marie (Bertram) Conkie.
Ken was born in San Francisco, California on October 8, 1964, and grew up in the Bay Area. He graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School in 1983 and married his high-school sweetheart Elizabeth on September 22, 1990. They were looking forward to celebrating 27 years of marriage this year along with several excursions in their new tent trailer to Ken's favorite destination – Silver Lake. Ken was an avid outdoorsman and when not dressed in his familiar red Smith's uniform where he worked as a clerk for 18 years, he could be found camping, fishing, shooting, hunting, or hiking, with Liz close-at-hand and her ever-present camera.
After marriage, Ken moved to Pollock Pines, California where he worked as a goldsmith with his father, William Sr., at their business, Time World Jewelers. In 1999, Ken and Liz moved to Gardnerville where Ken began his long-standing employment with Smith's and where Liz would eventually find employment as a courtesy clerk with the area's other major grocery store, Raley's.
Most Carson Valley residents found themselves at Ken's check stand at one time or another, where he quickly befriended them. Many would go out of their way just to find Ken's line, even if it wasn't the shortest, because of his pleasant demeanor and big smile. A trip anywhere in the local area with Ken was almost like traveling with a celebrity. He couldn't go anywhere without waves and chats and handshakes from his customers. He was much loved and his loss will be deeply felt by friends and family alike.
A celebration of Ken's life will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 12-3 pm at Valley Christian Fellowship, 1352 Highway 395 in Gardnerville. It will be officiated by Pastor Leo Kruger with food and flowers generously donated by Smith's and Raley's. Attendees are asked to bring a story to share about Ken and how he made their life brighter.
Ken's ashes will be scattered at a later date in a private family ceremony where his mother Katharine also has her final resting place.
A Facebook page has been established by Smith's co-workers, customers, and friends to assist Liz with funeral and ongoing expenses.
