Nurse joins Shepherd of the Sierra staff

Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church – always interested in serving the needs of the community -has recently added a parish nurse to its staff.

Joann Markwardt, RN, has agreed to enhance the ministry team of Shepherd of the Sierra by providing primary, whole person nursing services across the health span for the purpose of assisting members and friends of SOS achieve and maintain optimal mental, physical and spiritual health. She is a member of the ministerial team who has received specialized training in parish nursing.

Among her many responsibilities, nurse Markwardt will be providing health and prevention information on such things as medications, nutrition, aging issues, stress, mental health and health management issues. If requested, she will make home visits to persons newly discharged from hospital. She will take the congregation’s care to persons in nursing homes and hospitals and support families experiencing difficulties, crisis and grief. She will help those who need guidance to navigate through the health care system and teach classes relating to health concerns.

Nurse Markwardt is well qualified to serve Shepherd of the Sierra. Since graduating from the Highland School of Nursing in Oakland, Calif., she has had 25 years of nursing experience, including her work in hospitals and physicians’ offices.

She worked on medical/surgical, gyn and orthopedic areas before taking a coronary care course and working in a coronary and surgical ICU for eight years. She also took an intensive course in Henderson at the Parish Nurse Preparation Institute – an extension course through Marquette University College of Nursing.

Shepherd of the Sierra is located a half mile north of Highway 395 and Jacks Valley Road at 3680 U.S. Highway 395. Entrance to SOS – on the west side of the highway – is shared with Fountainhead Foursquare Church.
