During the regular Alpine County Board of Supervisors Meeting Tuesday, the Board adopted a resolution proclaiming the week of April 18 to 24, 2004 as “Crime Victims Rights Week”.

Alpine District Attorney Will Richmond, on behalf of his victim witness program, presented Detective Tom Nagel with an plaque in recognition of his outstanding efforts in 2003 to promote justice for victims of crime in the county. Tom has over 20 years service in the Sheriff’s Department.

After the ceremony, Margaret Purdy, guardian of a senior citizen, related an incident County Assessor Dave Peets observed which appeared to be a questionable transaction detrimental to the interests of the senior. Detective Tom Nagel was assigned the case for investigation, which eventually lead to a trial and conviction. Purdy stated to the Board, “I believe Alpine County citizens are lucky to have a detective of Tom Nagel’s ability. I believe he is to be commended for his hard work and should be recognized for doing a superior job.

Superior Court Judge Dave DeVore, who attended the ceremony, emphasized the high value of law enforcement personnel, and added that the “system” is much like a chess game where the first few plays often determine the outcome of the end game where he presides.
