Miss Douglas, Miss Tahoe-Douglas head to Nevada pageant

Staff reports

Tiffany Ahrens, Miss Tahoe Douglas 1998, and Jennifer Fox, Miss Douglas County 1998, are busy preparing for the Miss Nevada Scholarship pageant to be held Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28, at 2 p.m. in the celebrity showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks.

Ahrens and Fox will compete with 17 other state finalists for scholarship money totaling over $20,000, with the new Miss Nevada representing the Silver State at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., in September.

The 19 state finalists will participate in all four phases of competition – personal interview, talent, swimsuit and evening wear. Pageant Week begins on Sunday, June 21, with personal appearances, including serving as hostesses at the National Conference of Mayors, media interviews, photo sessions, dinner and lunch engagements and, of course, hours of rehearsals and lots of fun and excitement, said Miss Douglas County Pageant board member Fran Macias.

Ahrens will perform a tap dance to “I’ve got Rhythm” for the talent competition. Her platform is substance abuse prevention. She is 18 years old and is a 1998 graduate of George Whittell High School. She will attend the University of Nevada, Reno to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Her career ambition is to become a registered nurse, specializing in pediatrics.

Fox will perform a vocal presentation to “Shy” from the musical, “Once Upon a Mattress.” Her platform is the importance of mentoring children. She is 17 years old and a recent graduate of Douglas High School. She plans to attend Western Nevada Community College. Her career goal is to become a pediatric physician.

Tickets for the Miss Nevada Scholarship Pageant are available through the Nugget celebrity showroom. As the community’s official ambassadors, both Miss Tahoe Douglas and Miss Douglas County are available for public appearances at community fund-raising events, open houses, ribbon cuttings and most importantly, school appearances, Macias said.

For further information, contact a Miss Douglas County Pageant board member: Macias, 782-6999, Shirley Connole, 265-6316, or Teresa Rose, 265-6608.
