Minden girl wins $500 for Mother’s Day card entry

by Joyce Hollister

How creatively can you tell your mother that you love her? Kelly Lopeman, an 11-year-old 5th grader at Minden Elementary School, earned $500 and national recognition for her entry in the Mother’s Day Card Contest sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken, Family Circle magazine and Hallmark this month.

She was one of the top 10 national winners, and her design and verse for the winning card will be on display at the Empire State Building in New York City until May 10.

Kelly’s card depicts a bee spelling out “Mother’s Day” as it flies between a smiling sun and a red rose. The verse reads: “Smiling joyfully like the sun, A mother’s work is never done. Busy buzzing like a bee, You’re always caring just for me.”

“My grandma told me about it,” Kelly said of the contest, “and asked me if I wanted to enter. So I said OK.”

It took her about 15 minutes to come up with her winning design and text. She said most mothers like roses, and she had been thinking of bees, so the two naturally went together.

She completed her entry in the art room at the home of her grandmother, Lorrene Palmer of Gardnerville. She follows in her grandmother’s footsteps in her liking for art. She likes to draw and takes a weekly art class taught by Mark Tompkins.

Kelly didn’t think that she would win the contest, and so didn’t tell her mother that she had entered. It was a surprise for both of them to get the first of the letters telling her of her winning a top-10 slot in the contest and her prizes.

“She was really surprised and happy that I entered,” Kelly said.

Kelly lives with her mom and dad, Sally and Alan Lopeman and her brother Brian in Minden. She entered the contest last fall when she was 10.

Kelly banked half of her winnings and bought herself a television set and new clothes with part of the rest.

She also receives a Rand McNally Picture Atlas of the World for herself and one for her teacher, Maureen Foley-Marenco, to use in the classroom. Her teacher will also receive a Texas Instruments Math Explorer calculator, and Kelly will receive coupons for kfc – to take her mother to dinner on Mother’s Day.
