Mary Fair publishes new book
Mary Settelmeyer Fair earned a first-place Nevada Press Association award for her Gems from DCHS column she wrote for The Record-Courier, and with her new book, she will win the hearts of her readers.
‘Spinnings, With Words, With Pictures,” a paperbound book published in April, offers these columns and many other pieces that Fair has written for publication in the R-C over the years.
They are accompanied with photos taken recently and in the past.
Fair profiled Marlena Hellwinkel, for example, for an edition of the R-C’s today’s Woman special section and Leland Arigoni for an issue of the Carson Valley Almanac.
Fair also incudes reflections of her early years and some of her other writings, including poetry, and photos of her childhood.
She said of the book, “What a pleasure in the collecting of these stories, interviews with the subjects. Interesting to read the life experience first hand. A privilege. A pleasure.”
Her book was introduced at the recent Spring Afternoon with the Authors, held at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center. Fair, 92, was the newsletter editor for the Carson Valley Historical Society for many years, and proceeds from this new book will go to the society, she said.
At the reception, she signed copies of her book.
“I enjoyed the day, it was wonderful,” Fair said. “A lot of my friends, and most of my family, were there. It was gratifying.”
The book is on sale at the museum and cultural center and other businesses in Minden and Gardnerville. The book sells for $15.
“It’s my gift to the community,” she said.
