Mammoth’s Suzanne Stokes killed in Bridgeport accident

Authorities respond to a fatal accident south of Bridgeport in Mono County.

A Mammoth Lakes woman was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 395 south of Bridgeport that injured a Minden woman.

Suzanne Stokes, 86, was killed in the accident that was reported 12:24 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Stokes was driving a 1996 Subaru stationwagon northbound on the highway, which appeared to cross the center lane into the path of a 2012 GMC van driven south by Minden resident Barbara Koehler, 62.

According to the highway patrol, officers found the two vehicles blocking the southbound lane of the highway. Stokes was dead at the scene. Koehler was taken to Bridgeport by Mono County Paramedics, then transferred to a CareFlight Air ambulance. She was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment.

The exact sequence of events remains under investigation by the highway patrol. The Mono County Sheriff’s Office will determine the cause of death.

Bridgeport Area CHP commander Lt. R.D. Cohan expressed his condolences to the family of Suzanne Stokes and for a speedy recovery to Mrs. Koehler.

“Collisions of this type demonstrate the need for drivers to continuously be attentive and remain vigilant about keeping their vehicles within their lane. This collision happened on a clear, sunny day with no inclement weather.”

In addition to the CHP, Mono County Sheriff’s Office and Mono County Paramedics, the Bridgeport Fire Department and California Department of Transportation responded to the scene to provide assistance.
