Youth orchestra concert Saturday
The Sierra Philharmonic League, with members in both Douglas County and Carson City, is sponsoring the second annual Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra concert.
The concert is 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Carson City Community Theater.
“This is a great opportunity to see kids doing positive things,” said Douglas County youth concert chair Jean Noosinow. “Last year the concert was wonderful. We came out of it feeling so good and positive about our youth.”
On the program for the concert are popular pieces for everyone’s tastes, she said, including “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “Memory” from the broadway musical “Cats” by Andrew Lloyd Weber, “Can-Can” by Jacques Offenbach and other pieces by Haydn, von Suppe, Gounod and Britten. Lynn Auman will be conducting.
The Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra has been touring northern Nevada to expose communities without a youth orchestra to the possibilities of developing one.
The Sierra Philharmonic League was established 14 years ago to expand the musical experiences of the people of Carson City, Carson Valley, The Comstock and Lake Tahoe by presenting several musical events closer to home.
The league has sponsored the “Pops in the Park” concerts held on July 4th in Genoa at Mormon Station State Park for the past 14 years.
Saturday’s concert is free. The Carson City Community Theater is located at the corner of Roop Street and Highway 50 in Carson City.
