Winter weather adisory in effect today

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Carson Valley until 10 p.m. as light to moderate snow is expected to fall late this morning with periods of heavy snow possible in Douglas and southern Lyon counties.

According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulations of 3-6 inches are expected in Douglas with up to 2 inches in Reno and Carson City.

The snow is expected to pose an inconvenience to travelers, with snow and ice first developing on bridges and overpasses.

More than 7 inches of snow fell in Carson Valley along the foothills north of Genoa. A National Weather Service spotter reported 6 inches of new snowfall between 5 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

As much snow fell in the Valley as did at the ski resorts on Saturday, with Heavenly reporting 3 inches and Kirkwood reporting 5 inches.
