WHS senior is Miss Douglas County; Derobertis, Alder are runnersup
Megan Glasson took home the prestigious rhinestone crown and a $2,500 scholarship Sunday after competing with seven other contestants in the 1999 Miss Douglas County Scholarship Pageant at Caesars Tahoe.
Glasson, a George Whittell High School senior whose platform involves increasing literacy, is now eligible to run for Miss Nevada in June. Surrounded by fans, the jubilant newly crowned Miss Douglas County remained calm and collected. She said she would celebrate her victory by going out to dinner with her family and friends.
“I feel this great combination of adrenaline and exhaustion,” Glasson said. “My scholarship money is going directly into my college education fund. I don’t know where I’m going yet, but I’m definitely going straight to college after high school.”
First runner-up and recipient of a $1,000 scholarship was Julia Derobertis, with a platform focusing on improving self-esteem in young children. Derobertis, a first-year student at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., performed Festival of the Fountains on the piano for the talent section of the pageant. Derobertis was also the recipient of the Sheila Harris Award for outstanding personal interview which includes $100 donated by Caesars Tahoe.
Douglas High School senior Heidi Alder won second runner-up and an $800 scholarship. During the interview part of the event, Alder said she would like to study English in Great Britain and hopes to become a professional writer or teacher.
Whittell High School senior Justin Barnes won third runner-up and a $500 scholarship which she hopes will help her earn a degree in acting. Barnes performed a monologue for the talent section.
“I really enjoy comedy,” Barnes said.
The $5,700 in scholarships awarded by the Miss Douglas County Scholarship Program came from donations by both civic and private organizations, ticket sales and fund-raisers, said Fran Macias, executive director for the Miss Douglas County Scholarship Program.
The new Miss Douglas County will go on to compete at the Miss Nevada Pageant at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks, June 26 and 27.
