West Slope fire continues to grow
A fire burning near Interstate 80 and Gold Run is continuing to spread as high temperatures are expected to increase this week.
The Lowell Fire has grown to 1,700 acres with a line around a fifth of it. An estimated 1,800 structures are threatened in Placer and Nevada counties. Mandatory evacuations are in place and five exits of Interstate 80 have been closed as a result of the fire. The interstate itself remained open on Monday.
The Lowell Fire started Saturday afternoon, and sent smoke into Western Nevada, including Carson Valley on Sunday.
The Kyburz Fire is 98 percent contained. Highway 50 reopened Saturday night.
The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures near 100 this week as high pressure builds in Western Nevada.
Thunderstorms are expected to make their return this weekend.
