Werner "Vern" K. Buege


A memorial service is 1 p.m. today at FitzHenry’s Funeral Home, 1380 Highway 395, in Gardnerville for Werner “Vern” K. Buege, 81, who died in Carson City after a long illness.

Born in Charlottenburg, Germany, near Berlin, Nov. 15, 1929, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada, as a young man and then to Monterey, Calif., in 1953.

He worked construction and then moved to Santa Clara County where he started working in the restaurant profession. He worked at the Garden City Hofbrau for several years and then was hired by Dr. Norman McFate at the Las Gatos Lodge where he worked for 28 years. He loved to cook and became head chef at the lodge.

He retired from the lodge in 2003 and moved to Gardnerville, where he fished, cooked and made new friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and family.

He is survived by his close friend and caregiver Carol Jean Lake-Johnson.

He will be buried in Genoa Cemetery.
