The Carson Valley Community Food Closet will hold its 7th annual Wacky Waddlers Wiver Wace (Rubber Duck Race) Sunday, June 13, at Lampe Park. The festivities begin with post time at 1 p.m.

Rubber ducks will go on sale shortly at a variety of businesses in Carson Valley. The race is co-sponsored by Gardnerville Spa and Pool, 1540 Highway 395 South (where you can purchase a duck), owned and operated by Layne and Don Aufdenkamp, who generously provide the rubber ducks each year.

“If you buy your wucky ducky early enough you can spend some sunny days training, nurturing and getting your wacky waddler ready for the wace,” said food closet spokesperson Rosemarie Middendorf.

Only waterproof markers may be used to identify ducks, and ducks with any other embellishment will automatically be eliminated from the race.

“When you purchase a rubber duck, it will bear a racing number, and you will receive a matching numbered ticket which not only identifies you as the owner, but will also be used for door prizes that will be distributed,” Middendorf said.

The races, which are held in conjunction with Carson Valley Days, will begin with a business race (business against business) at 1 p.m., the general public race will be at 1:30 p.m. and the club and organization race at 2 p.m. Winners of the business and club and organization races will receive a perpetual trophy and medallion, both of which will be engraved with the winners’ names. The trophy will remain in the possession of the winner until next year’s race.

Generous prizes will be awarded to the winner (first), place (second) and show (third) and the very tired last place in the general public race. Other prizes donated by businesses and individuals in the community will be available as door prizes.

Rubber ducks may be purchased for the general public race (open to all ages) for a $5 donation per duck; business and club organization ducks are $50 each and are tax-deductible. More than one duck may be purchased.

Proceeds from the Wacky Waddlers Wiver Wace will assist with the maintenance and operation of the Carson Valley Community Food Closet located in the Hussman Building at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville. Ducks may be purchased there on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.
