Vet of the month receives recognition

John Louritt of Gardnerville received the Veteran of the Month award from Gov. Sandoval March 15 at the Veterans and Military Day ceremony at the Nevada Legislature. Louritt was nominated for the award by Nevada Department of Veterans Services Director Kat Miller. Louritt is a decorated Vietnam veteran and was a sergeant in the US Marine Corp. After his military service he served more than 30 years in the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Louritt recently completed the Nevada Department of Veteran Services Veteran Advocate Program, and over the last two years he has helped more than 400 veterans answer questions about benefits and helped prepare disability benefits claims. Louritt does this as a member of Welcome All Veterans Everywhere, a Douglas County non-profit organization that exclusively helps local veterans. He is also treasurer of the Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge. Previously he served as president. He is also a trustee of the Nevada State Elks Association and serves or several other local boards.
