"Vaseline boy’ comes in third
“That’s me. That’s me!” shrieked 4-year-old Nolan Lackey as he watched himself on America’s Funniest Home Videos last Sunday.
The now infamous “Vaseline Boy” – who smeared a large jar of Vaseline all over himself when he was 2-1/2, enjoyed his 10 minutes of fame, according to his mother, Trena.
“He was really excited,” she said, adding that friends and family who came to watch the show and eat dinner that night seemed equally impressed.
“It was great,” Trena said. “My father-in-law made fajitas and we all had a real good time. The phone didn’t quit ringing until around 10 o’clock. Now all our friends say they are going to send in videos.”
Prior to the airing of the show, the Lackeys were sworn to secrecy as to which place they had won. Out of the four families flown to the taping, Vaseline Boy placed third by a vote of the studio audience.
“We were as surprised as anyone,” Trena said, explaining that during the three-hour taping, no one is told who will be the first, second and third place winners.
“We thought the little girl who spread the lipstick everywhere would win,” she said. That clip won second place.
The first place winner was springer spaniel who attacked a board game as its owners were playing the game on the floor.
Winning third was nothing to sneeze at, however. The Lackeys were awarded $2,000 and received a free trip to Hollywood for the taping.
“We’re going to buy a computer with the money,” Trena said, “and Nolan will get to learn on it.”
She said that after Nolan woke up from his Vaseline-smeared nap 18 months ago, she asked him why he had smeared the Vaseline all over his body. Not normally a mischievous child, his reply was simple.
“Well, it felt good, Mom,” he said.
Getting the Vaseline out of his clothes and hair was nearly impossible, she added.
“But he did have the softest skin for weeks,” she said.
