Valley nursing home to close
Leaving a great void in elderly care in the Carson Valley, the Barton Skilled Nursing Facility announced to its clients Thursday it will close in 30 days.
Barton officials either did not return phone calls Friday or said they could not comment. No one denied the center, which is located behind Merrill Gardens Assisted Living Center, is closing.
Gardnerville resident John Cressaty was told he would have to find another care center for his cousin, Alice Sayles, 94.
“The reason we were given is it is just losing money,” Cressaty said.
The Barton facility is the only skilled nursing center in the Valley. It has 60 beds and has been open less than two years.
Cressaty said he is hoping Carson Valley Residential Care Center on Kimmerling Road will accept his cousin. Receptionist Lori Mullin said Friday the care center has received many calls from families of Barton’s patients.
“The phones are ringing off the hook,” Mullin said. “We’ve been over there assessing residents night and day. Because we are an assisted living facility, we can’t take all of them, but we are going to be picking up a few.”
Cressaty and his family brought Sayles from Las Vegas to the skilled nursing facility Dec. 18.
Cressaty said his family won’t have problems placing Sayles in another facility because she has gained so much strength under the nurses’ care.
“After the first couple of weeks, she could have been moved to a place without skilled nursing. I’m in no way upset with Barton at all. They’ve been wonderful. The care and staff there have been great,” Cressaty said. “There are two people I work with who have mothers there, and they both are in need of skilled nursing care. It’s those folks who are scrambling because there are no more skilled nursing facilities.”
