Update: Carson authorities investigate homicide

Staff Reports

Three suspects are being questioned by detectives about the shooting that left one man dead Monday morning in what Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong described as a possible drug transaction gone wrong.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said that the victim and suspects were at the scene to complete a drug transaction for about 3 ounces of marijuana, when the situation escalated quickly and one male was shot in the abdomen. He said that the victim and suspects all knew of each other and that they had arranged to meet in the Northridge neighborhood for the transaction.

Investigators were able to identify the suspects and place surveillance with Nevada Highway Patrol and Juvenile Probation on the apartment where they were suspected of living. SWAT teams were able to make entry into the apartment around 8:30 a.m., and all three suspects were detained without incident. All residences around the apartment were evacuated prior to the breech.

All suspects are over the age of 18, however one was also arrested on an outstanding juvenile warrant. It is unknown if the woman was at the scene in Northridge Monday morning, and she was taken into custody as well.

Furlong said that witnesses said both male suspects had guns, believed to be semi-automatic handguns though no weapons have been recovered so far.

“This was an arranged buy and for whatever reason it went south and erupted immediately into a shooting,” Furlong said.

It is too early to determine if the driver of the victim’s vehicle will be charged with anything, though Furlong said that everyone is cooperating.

Carson City dispatchers received reports of multiple shots fired at 12:39 a.m. Monday at a park near Windridge and Spooner drives in North Carson City.

Furlong said that as units arrived in the area, Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center Emergency Room doctors reported that a man had arrived at their center with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

The victim was in critical condition and transported to Renown Medical Center by Care Flight. He was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m.

“Detectives are interviewing witnesses at this time,” Furlong said, “as well as the adult male who transported the victim to the hospital.”

Furlong said that the victim is an 18-20 year old male and that the victim and suspect had met at the park, at the corner of Windridge and Spooner Drives for a drug deal. Deputies responded to the park for a call of shots fired when they got reports that the victim was at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. Furlong said that the victim’s friend was in the vehicle at the time and drive the victim to the hospital where he later died.
