The race is officially on for 30 members of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority.

In an effort to increase chamber membership, five teams of competitors will be racing each other to the finish during the first annual Carson Valley Round-up Membership Drive, which started yesterday and will run until March 26.

The theme of the round-up is a horse race. Keeping with the theme, each team has chosen a captain and a silk color.

Monique Reno’s team, “Ride, Sally, Ride,” is red; Leesa Hanson’s team, “Prince of Magenta,” is purple; Jay Lather’s team, “We Ain’t No Chickens,” is yellow; Daryl Reedy’s team, “The Mother Lode,” is silver; and Ron Pierini’s team,”Strike of Gold,” is gold.

The chamber and The Record-Courier have recently formed a partnership to help foster a better working relationship between businesses and the community.

“Local business owners are generally some of the most involved members in any community,” said R-C General Manager Matt Bodourian. “I’m for anything that promotes business in the Valley and stops the leakage of shoppers going out of town.”

In the spirit of the partnership, new members who join the chamber during the drive will get a free 2-column-by-2-inch TOMA (top of mind awareness) ad in The Record-Courier (value $50) and 15 free spots on KGVM Radio (value $100). The cost for a business to sign up with the chamber is $100, plus $11 per employee.

“I’m very excited about the drive,” said Dave Bolick, chamber executive director. “The competition is unreal. These guys are really going at it.”

He said the next three weeks will find chamber members knocking on doors looking for new members.

“Anyone who doesn’t get called, but is interested in joining can call me to get more information,” he added. “If they’re going to join, it pays to do it now while we’re offering the free advertising.”

Bolick said there are currently 411 chamber members and he hopes the drive will put the membership at 500 or more.

Chamber members enjoy the collective benefits of publicity, grand opening ceremonies, the Chamber Chatter – a weekly publication, clinics – seminars and workshops, publications and brochures and the benefit of networking in a group of like-minded people who want to see Carson Valley businesses not only succeed but thrive.
