The RC Morning Report for Sept. 5
A noninjury accident at Mica Drive and Highway 395 at 6:54 a.m. could snarl some traffic through northern Douglas County. Medics reported no injuries and firefighters are clearing the southbound lanes.
That last 20 percent of containment on the Rim fire is going to be why the final date isn’t until Sept. 20. The fire’s at 237,431 acres this morning, an increase of 1,500 acres over the last 24 hours. The number of firefighters on scene has dropped below 4,000, while the cost is up to $81 million.
It appears containment on that fire is inversely proportional to the amount of smoke we’re getting, as back firing operations add to that from the blaze itself. It was smoky out this morning, with the latest air quality in the unhealthy range at 174.
County commissioners meet 1 p.m. today. In addition to Sierra Country Estates water system and extending the redevelopment agreement, a proposal to raise the speed limit on East Valley Road to 45 mph is up for consideration. Commissioners meet in the historic Minden courthouse, 1616 Eighth St.
A red flag warning goes into effect for 12 hours starting 11 a.m. Otherwise, the forecast calls for smoke, wind and more smoke. Expect a high temperature of 84, and breezy with the wind southwest up to 20-25 mph in the afternoon. Gusts could hit 35 mph.
