The RC Morning Report for Aug. 8
August 8, 2013
Hot August Nights comes to Minden at around 10:30 a.m. today, with hundreds of classic cars taking over Esmeralda Avenue for the annual poker run from Reno to Lake Tahoe. They'll have a brand new section of street to drive on. Workers were taking down the cones this morning where they'd finished with the southern section of Esmeralda next to the C.O.D. Garage casino's future parking lot.
A Bison fire dust devil prompted firefighters to respond to East Valley and Stockyard 2:22 p.m. Wednesday. East Fork and Sierra Front firefighters were dispatched after the caller said there were flames visible. When firefighters arrived at the intersection there were no flames.
An earlier call in Pine View Estates was the result of drift smoke from the Aspen and Power fires burning in California. According to smoke plume maps issued by the National Weather Service, we may be the only place in Western Nevada and Northern California not getting a ton of drift smoke today. That could change with the wind, as these fires are still pumping out a ton of smoke.
There's a chance we could get scattered thundershowers today, with storms expected to be stronger and possibly severe. Large hail and winds 60-70 mph are possible with the strongest storms.
