The R-C Morning Report for June 29

Genoa, Nev. — There’s a 300-acre forest fire burning in El Dorado County along the middle fork of the American River with mandatory evacuations in place and a 1,000-acre wild fire burning near the Lander County line well north of Highway 50 between Fallon and Austin. That ring of fire is starting to close in on Western Nevada. A lightning strike in the Bodie Hills near Sonora Junction set a tenth-acre fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 50 people attended the State of the County presentation on Tuesday night, many of them honorees for the county’s Spotlight awards. The list is on The R-C’s Twitter feed and I’ll get it written up later today.

We may have got as close as we will to breaking a high temperature record for this week. Minden recorded a high of 96 degrees on Tuesday. That’s 4 degrees short of the record set in 2006. The record for June 29 is 104 set in 1932.

I hope it doesn’t get that hot. The forecast calls for 96 degrees under mostly sunny skies. There’s a chance for some thunderstorms to the south, but they didn’t amount to much on Tuesday, and I expect it will be similar today.
