Suspect accused of shooting, dismembering cat

Staff Reports

A 53-year-old Indian Hills man was arrested late Thursday accused of shooting and dismembering a stray cat he claimed was responsible for hundreds of dollars in veterinary bills.

Deputies were called to the 3400 block of Tourmaline Drive at 11 p.m. by a neighbor who said he heard suspect Rodney Shoop yelling and calling him “a satanic bastard.”

He told dispatch the suspect was possibly chopping up an animal with an ax.

When deputies arrived at the suspect’s house, they found his 20-year-old son sitting outside in a chair. Shoop emerged from the shadows, and would not comply with deputies’ commands to stop.

He was detained and appeared to be heavily intoxicated, according to reports.

The son said Shoop had been angered about a stray gray cat which created problems with his own cat that resulted in veterinary bills.

He said the cat was underneath Shoop’s house and he shined a flashlight on the animal at his father’s request.

The son said he watched his father shoot the cat with a shotgun.

Shoop then reportedly took the cat to the back yard and chopped it up with an ax.

Deputies recovered the remains of a gray cat on a chopping block in the back yard along with an ax covered in blood and fur.

The cat’s head was found in a neighbor’s yard.

The shotgun contained on empty shell casing and four live rounds. When Shoop was taken into custody, officers found nine shotgun shells in the jacket of his pocket.

Officers checked inside the house to make sure there were no injured people or another crime scene.

Shoop was jailed on $6,274 bail on allegations of animal cruelty, obstructing justice and a weapons offense.

He is to appear in East Fork Justice Court on Tuesday morning.
