Springs fire 5 percent contained

Staff Reports

Hand crews working through the night got a line around 5 percent of the Springs fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains.

One of five fires set by lightning on Sunday afternoon, the Spring fire was held at 1,193 acres through the night.

Handline construction will continue today, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatcher Helen Frazier.

Structures are threatened by the fire, as well as mule deer and sage grouse habitat.

As of this morning, five hand crews, three helicopters, nine engines and 150 personnel are working on the fire.

The Divide fire burning above Fish Springs also held at 53 acres overnight. Two hand crews and an engine are working on that fire.

Both fires are on Bureau of Land Management territory. Firefighters from the East Fork Fire District, U.S. Forest Service and Nevada Division of Forestry are helping to fight the fire.

While lighting prompted several brief power outages, NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist said he had no reports of lengthy outages.

Today’s thunderstorms are expected to start winding down at 4 p.m. and clearing by 10 p.m.
