Dozens of classic, wooden boats will be on display at the Tahoe Keys Marina this weekend.
The 8th annual South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic will highlight the 1950s and finned vintage boats as part of this year’s theme. More than 50 wooden boats are expected to be displayed at this year’s show.
“Boats manufactured in the 1950s and any boats with fins, which are not exclusive to the 1950s as many first generation fiberglass boats as well as some metal race boats had fins, will be featured,” according to organizers. “These beauties will be joined by all classic, vintage or antique boats.”
Another icon of the 1950s — Elvis Presley — will get his due at this weekend’s show.
Elvis would have turned 80 this year, and there will be Elvis-themed festivities during the festivities, which include wine, food, vendors and live music. For an additional $15, attendees can also sample more than 30 craft beers in the show’s Beer Village.
The show will also celebrate the 75th year of George Whittell Jr.’s Hacker Craft Commuter, The Thunderbird.
Produced by the Antique and Classic Boat Society Northern CA/Lake Tahoe chapter, the show features boats originally owned by prominent Lake Tahoe families who played a significant part in Tahoe’s rich maritime history. The mission of the organization is to bring together people with a common interest in historic, antique and classic boats for the purpose of sharing information, experiences and ideas.
The show’s awards presentation will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday at Sugar Pine Point State Park.
