Sierra Lutheran takes regional academic competition

Sierra Lutheran High School won the Academic Olympics regional tournament held at their campus Nov. 5 by edging past Virginia City High School 22.5 to 21.5 points.

The Falcons won the event by winning two of the four rounds of questions.

After taking a 2-point lead following the first two rounds, the team held off a Virginia City rally to capture the early points lead in the regional standings.

The Academic Olympics program consists of three regional events for high schools in the division 4 northern region, west division. The top three schools that amass the most cumulative points after all three regional events will advance to the state finals, which will be held in Tonopah on Nov. 26.

The teams included in the northern region, west division are Sierra Lutheran, Virginia City, Smith Valley, Mineral County, Excel Christian, and Pyramid Lake. Sierra Lutheran will travel to Virginia City on Nov. 13 for the second regional tournament of the season.
