Sheriff’s Office releases name of woman found dead of gunshot
Detectives are investigating the gunshot death of a Gardnerville woman shortly after midnight Sunday.
The woman was identified as Rachel Ann Vargas, 31, a former Paso Robles, Calif., resident.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home in the 1300 block of Waterloo Lane at about 12:30 a.m. after dispatchers received a call from a man who told them his wife had shot herself at their home.
Deputies found Vargas lying dead on the floor in the living room of the home, with a single gunshot wound to her head. A recently discharged handgun was found lying next to her, according to Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Jim Halsey.
Deputies spoke with Vargas’ husband, who said she may have been emotionally distraught over personal issues.
Dan Jones, who said he was a friend of Vargas’ from California, said hundreds of people are mourning her death.
“All of us cannot believe she would kill herself,” Jones said. “This is a tragedy and she always put her kids first.”
Before she came to Gardnerville, Vargas worked at Downtown Brewing Co. in Paso Robles.
“Rachel was one of the most popular bartenders in all of the five cities here on the coast from Paso Robles down to Pismo Beach,” Jones said. “She has the greatest sense of humor and could brighten anyone’s day.”
