Sheriff’s office investigates allegation coach hit

Staff reports

The Carson City Sheriff’s Department is investigating a confrontation in which a Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School coach was allegedly attacked by an angry parent.

The incident occurred Tuesday following a game at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City.

The father of a PWLMS 8th-grade girls’ basketball player, apparently upset that the team lost, approached head coach Justin Pruett after the game and punched him in the back of the head.

Pruett told The Record-Courier the parent was angry that the coach played all of the girls rather than focusing solely on winning the game.

“We had beaten (Eagle Valley) two times in a row,” Pruett said. “I tried to make it a challenge to win with everyone playing at least one quarter. I told the team before the game that everyone would play at least one quarter.”

Several people witnessed the altercation.

A report has been forwarded to the Carson City district attorney’s office, according to Chief Deputy Bernie Curtis, but charges had not been filed as of Friday afternoon.

The identity of the parent was not released and Curtis said he could not comment further because the incident is under investigation.
