Sertoma celebrates new and returning scholarship winners
Carson Valley Sertoma Club announced the winners of the annual Book Scholarship Awards at their Scholarship Celebration Breakfast on May 20. This year’s winners are Kelsey Kjer, Zach Keller, Sabrina Lehrke and Spencer Flanders.
Attending the celebration in the packed room at Carson Valley Sertoma Club’s regular meeting place, the C.O.D. Casino, were a number of past recipients who spoke of the value of, and their appreciation for, the scholarship that provided them with books for their four years of undergraduate studies. These recipients gave updates of their educational progress and their goals for the coming year. The past recipients attending this year were Jordan Broersma, Kyra Barth, Taylor Fruth, Leah Heydman, Ariah Barth, Chelsea Trent, Sonia Carlson, Jamie Schuck, Nolan Sheets and Brandon Harris.
Each year, Carson Valley Sertoma Club offers two different scholarships to Douglas County high school seniors: the 4-year book scholarship valued up to $1,000 per year to students planning on attending a 4-year college to study for a career in the helping professions; and the vocational scholarship (not awarded this year) for students who plan to attend a vocational or trade school or a community college certificate program leading to a career. After students submit the application, finalists are chosen by the scholarship committee and each student is interviewed. The winners are chosen from this pool of finalists. Applications for the 2017 scholarships will be available at each of the Douglas County high schools’ counseling offices and the Carson Valley Sertoma Club’s website in the fall.
