Serbian Christmas Jan. 7
People from miles around willcome to Sharkey’s Nugget in Gardnerville Wednesday to celebrate the Serbian Christmas. This year’s event marks the 27th year that the January 7th holiday will be celebrated with a free feast.
“It’s a family tradition. My grandmother used to do it. My dad was raised this way,” said Sharkey’s daughter Mashelle Begovich. “They follow the old calendar and Christmas was on January 7.”
Mashelle said the number of people at the celebration varies from year to year. “We’ll have food for all that we can take and more.”
Last year’s celebration drew quite a crowd despite the floods. “We had an unbelievable crowd,” she said. “It’ll go on no matter what.”
The dinner, which begins at 5 p.m., is free to the public. Goat, pig, turkey and ham will be served along with a variety of side dishes.
“Everybody seems to really enjoy it, and this is our way for saying thank you to the community for keeping us in business all these years and being loyal customers,” she said.
