Senior citizens law academy is planned

Staff reports

The fourth senior citizen’s law enforcement academy will be held starting April 5.

During this 10-week academy, students will be exposed to a variety of law enforcement topics in classroom sessions. The emphasis is placed on hands-on classes, including uniform patrol, criminal investigations, emergency vehicle operations, handgun qualification and crime scene processing.

The classes will be four hours each and the sign-up is available now. The class size is limited to 50 students who are at least 50 years of age. All applicants must be willing to submit to a local background check and have no felony convictions.

TRIAD and the sheriff’s office have worked together to create the academy in order to help make senior citizens more aware and comfortable with law enforcement services and give officers a better understanding of senior citizens’ needs.

For more information or to sign up, call the sheriff’s office at 782-9902 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
