Schultz ends season with strong finish
Minden kart racer Tanner Schultz finished the Northern Nevada Kart Club’s 2018 season series in third place.
Schultz finished third overall after a third place finish in the season’s last points race on Sunday.
Schultz started out the day first on the practice chart, then qualified fourth out of 9 racers in the Jr.2 LO206 class. In the first heat race, Schultz was able to move up to a second place finish.
In the second heat, Schultz started and finished in second. In the main event, Schultz had the best start of his career and made it up to first by the first turn. He led the pack which eventually split off into only Schultz, his teammate Cain
Fredricks, and Chase Dulude.
A little more than halfway through the race, Fredericks barely squeezed into the inside lane, passing Schultz into turn one. Dulude did the same move on the next lap.
Throughout the rest of the race, Schultz, Fredricks, and Dulude were bumper to bumper, and with about 2 laps ago, Schultz made contact with Dulude’s right rear tire with his front left tire on an attempted pass which caused his steering to go flying to the right. This almost caused Schultz to spin out but he saved it. By time he caught back up it was too late, the checkered flag was flying. Schultz finished third in the race and third in championship points.
“When I was sitting on the grid, my dad asked me if I was going for points or for the win, and I told him the win.” Schultz said. “We were fast all day and even set the fastest lap in the main, but we couldn’t pull it off.”
Schultz also finished 13th in points for the Kart Project X regional series out of 37 racers. Schultz is optimistic for next season and he plans on testing all winter.
