Mike Schiller will likely not win a Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series title but he’s still having the time of his life.

Among the highlights for the Carson Valley native, 63, was a second place finish in one of the recent races in the series. Schiller has one more race to go — the World Finals to be held Nov. 2-4 in Chandler, Ariz.

Schiller will look to win for the sixth time at the World Finals and to defend his title at the event. But even if he does win, Schiller said chances are slim he’ll win the overall series title. “I will fall a little short of this championship thing,” he said.

He added if he wins at the World Finals, “I’ll probably end up second.”

Schiller isn’t completely out of the running for the series title. “There’s a possibility,” he said. “It will take a miracle at this point.”

He said he’s been plagued by some mechanical issues this season but otherwise “things are going good. Everything has gone incredibly well for me. I’m tickled pink. I’m damn proud.”

Schiller has come all the way back from an automobile crash in 2010 that left him in a coma. He now races with an artificial leg.
