Gov. Brian Sandoval this week honored one Nevada veteran and a veterans’ services group for their service to the state.

Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services honored the Douglas County nonprofit Welcome All Veterans Everywhere (WAVE) program as Veteran Supporter of the Month recipient.

The award was presented during a Monday ceremony at the Capitol.

WAVE President Carl Schnock accepted the award on behalf of the organization that provides outreach programs for dealing with veterans’ issues. WAVE is dedicated to helping veterans get the benefits they have earned form the VA and provides services including transporting veterans to appointments for medical and other services.

In addition, Maj. Kevin Burns, USMC Retired, was honored as Nevada’s veteran of the month during Monday’s ceremony.

Burns is one of the founders of the United Veterans Legislative Council and coordinator of the Veterans Resource Center at Western Nevada College. He has also helped implement the Veterans Integration Program at Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City.
