Ranchos man turns self in on warrant
A Gardnerville Ranchos man accused of murder in the death of his girlfriend’s grandson was booked into Douglas County Jail on Monday.
John Edgar Stalcup, 56, is facing an open murder charge in connection with the Aug. 18, 2015, shooting of 19-year-old Ian Matthew Toepfer, 19.
He was given a Sept. 7 East Fork Justice Court.
A warrant was issued last week for the Ann Way resident, and he was given the opportunity to surrender to authorities.
East Fork Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins set a $25,000 bail.
The charges were based on evidence presented at a July 7 inquest, where the jury found that Toepfer’s death was by criminal means.
Stalcup admitted to shooting Toepfer, but said it was an accident.
The shooting occurred after a fight in which Toepfer punched Stalcup in the face, breaking his nose and orbital bone in his eye.
Toepfer left the scene of the fight with his grandmother while Stalcup filed a complaint with deputies.
An hour later when Toepfer returned, he was tackled by another man, and was face down at the bottom of the driveway.
Stalcup shot him with a .25 caliber pistol he got out of his vehicle after deputies left.
